When it comes to reds, the Veneto region of northeastern Italy is best-known for their Valpolicella. We love the ripe, fun wines from Buglioni, including their smartly-priced "Bugiardo", a blend of orgnaically-farmed, hand-harvested Corvina (60%), Corvinone (20%), Rondinella (10%), Croatina and 5% Oseleta (5%). The name "Il Bugiardo" translates as "The Liar." As the story goes, when the first vintage was released, an experienced sommelier exclaimed, "If this is not Amarone, it is a lying wine!" We understand this reaction. Tasted blind, this beauty would have fooled us too. It is chock full of black cherry, raisin, bittersweet chocolate and gorgeous exotic spices. (12/2022)
